New UK Mapping Tool To Help Prevent Spread Of Strangles

Horse & Hound reports that the Animal Health Trust (AHT) has created a website that will provide up-to-date information on strangles diagnoses across the United Kingdom using a map function that highlights regions where strangles cases have been confirmed. Part of the surveillance of equine strangles project that was launched in April 2019, this website will be beneficial for owners and caretakers of horses that travel around the country and world.

Strangles is one of the most diagnosed diseases, with more than 600 cases in the UK each year. Strangles has significant horse welfare and economic impact. On the website, users can see the most-common clinical signs of diagnosed horses, what tests were run on the horses and the demographics of the affected horses. Viewers will also be able to track seasonal trends as vets upload information to the site.

The project was a collaboration between the AHT, the Royal Veterinary College and the universities of Liverpool and Melbourne, with funding from the Horse Trust. The website is designed to reduce the spread of strangles; it is hoped that the tool will eventually be used worldwide.
