An updated and expanded neurologic stall has been gifted to the Virginia Tech’s Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center (EMC) in memory of a beloved patient of the center. Just Java, owned by Karen Jones Squires and James Squires, succumbed to laminitis in 2015.
The stall has been named the “Just Java” Neurologic Stall. The new stall replaces a makeshift stall that had been in the center’s intensive care unit that was cramped and difficult for clinicians and staff to work in.
The new areas combined two stalls in the isolation unit, a key location as neurologic horses often carry a contagious disease. The new stall is both private and quiet, assisting with patient well-being. The stall has double doors that allow center staff to enter and exit safely as neurologic horses are often unstable on their feet and a danger to those assisting them.
Additionally, the doors and stall are large enough that diagnostic equipment can be brought into the stall, eliminating the need to move the horse. The stall’s walls are padded and there is an overhead sling that can assist an unsteady horse.
