New Hypebeast Animated Series Fairfax Drops First Trailer

No one ever said being cool was easy. That’s the lesson Dale (Skyler Gisondo) learns hard and fast in Fairfax, Amazon’s new animated comedy, out October 29.

Titled after L.A.’s notorious hypebeast mecca — Fairfax Avenue, one of the world capitals of streetwear — the series co-stars pillars of queer excellence Jaboukie Young-White, Antebellum star Kiersey Clemons, and stand-up Peter Kim (as the cool kids, of course).  Based on the official trailer released earlier this week, it seems even the pigeons who hang around the block know what’s up on Fairfax Avenue.

Honestly, we’re already taking notes. (Fine, and sweating a little.)

“That outfit is normcore as hell!” Kim’s character Benny tells Dale, who just moved to town from Oregon.

“You look like if Tom Hanks f***ed an REI,” Young-White’s Truman cracks. (Savage.)

The neighborhood’s relentless quest for cool serves as backdrop for the four fast friends (including Clemons’ Derica) to learn how to embrace who they really are.

Fairfax also presents a refreshing reversal of sorts — it’s the white boy who’s new in town and figuring out how to fit in, while the in-the-know kids look to be Black and Asian American. That all three actors voicing them openly identify as queer is likewise a welcome coup. Given how often non-white and LGBTQ+ characters are cast as outsiders, it’s about time we see those roles reversed.

“I started in comedy,” Young-White told The Washington Post in an interview last month, adding, “At the core of comedy is usually a reversal of expectations, or a surprise, or at its molecular level just something that tickles you. That is always what’s going to excite me about projects.”

If Fairfax excites fans, they’re in for a treat: Amazon has already ordered two seasons, for a total of 16 episodes.

“It’s a modern look at the timeless struggle to be cooler than you are, to fit in while standing out, and what it feels like to wait in line for a pair of sneakers you’re never going to cop,” creators Matt Hausfater, Aaron Buchsbaum, and Teddy Riley said in a statement when the Fairfax was announced earlier this year.

Fairfax drops October 29 on Amazon Prime Video.
