The Stronach Group appears to have changed its mind about moving the Preakness away from Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, according to Maryland Matters. The track is in need of significant renovations, and Stronach has spent the past several years devoting the majority of its resources to nearby Laurel Park, but Pimlico’s 144-year history may not be at an end after all.
“We’ve been asked to explore ways and means to preserve and enhance the Preakness in Baltimore City, to preserve and enhance sustainable racing in the state, and to preserve and enhance the facilities that allow for that racing,” TSG attorney Alan Rifkin told the Maryland Racing Commission on Thursday. “It’s a challenge, but a challenge I think we’re up to meet. We’re optimistic that we can meet it.”
“Stronach’s not going to pay for it. The state doesn’t want to pay for it. The city doesn’t want to pay for it,” added commission chairman Michael J. Algeo. “But together — in conjunction with the Maryland Stadium Authority, bonds, and other private entities — I think we can get it done.”
