Neurologic Herpesvirus Diagnosis In New Jersey

An 18-year-old Standardbred mare in New Jersey was euthanized on December 18 after a positive diagnosis for equine herpesvirus myeloencephalopathy (EHM). The mare was housed in Monmouth County; the New Jersey Department of Agriculture reported that the mare’s vaccination history is unknown.

Other horses on the premise are under quarantine; temperatures are being taken twice daily.

The neurologic form of the equine herpesvirus varies between horses, with some becoming merely unsteady on their feet and others showing complete paralysis. There is no effective drug against infection; care is focused on easing symptoms and reducing the spread of disease.
