Nets GM Sean Marks: James Harden trade was not caused by concern over Kyrie Irving's absence

Nets general manager Sean Marks pulled off a blockbuster trade by acquiring James Harden in a four-team deal, but he insists that getting the deal done had nothing to do with Kyrie Irving not currently being with the team. Rather, he simply felt that Harden was too good of a player to not add when you have the chance.

“When you have the opportunity to add James Harden to your roster, you do everything you can to make that happen,” Marks said.

It’s not hard to understand Marks’ reasoning. On paper, the Nets look like they could have one of the most lethal offensive attacks in NBA history, as Durant and Harden are both elite scorers who have also won MVPs in their careers. The big question is will they have Irving as their point guard. If the trio clicks, they could run an unstoppable offense that would embarrass any team they play.

Marks said he had spoken to Irving and sounded optimistic, noting that “he’s excited about getting back on the court as soon as possible.” But Marks admitted that the timeline of Irving’s return will partially be decided by the NBA, as he said the Nets were “waiting on them to come out with a ruling” regarding Irving’s actions during his absence.

Irving’s talent is unquestionable, but there are serious questions about his commitment to playing in the NBA, as evidenced by him missing several games for “personal reasons” only to seemingly be seen partying for his sister’s birthday.
