Netanyahu Attempts to Negotiate Coalition Government as Midnight Deadline Looms

Israelis across the country voted for the fourth straight time in mere years to end the political gridlock that has taken over the country due to numerous scandals in longstanding Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration.

After the most recent election, Netanyahu’s party still did not secure a large enough majority to hold power, so he needs to come to agreements with other party politicians to secure another victory. If he cannot come up with the necessary partnerships by the May 4th deadline, then Israel’s President, Reuven Rivlin, decides what happens.

CBN News reports that Rivlin may give Netanyahu two more weeks to put something together, or he can opt to remove Netanyahu from office. Rivlin’s other options include allowing another coalition to try to form a government or asking parliament to decide who will run the country. It is unsure what Rivlin may choose if Netanyahu cannot form a government before the deadline at midnight tonight.

However, if all of these efforts fail, CBN News reports that Israelis would head back to the polls yet another time.

Netanyahu has been at the center of a corruption scandal where he claims the government is engaging in a coup against his rule. According to the Associated Press, Netanyahu was indicted with charges of fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in three separate cases. The Attorney General said he would be pressing charges against Netanyahu in November of 2019, marking the first-ever time a sitting prime minister faces criminal charges. Currently, the case is still playing out in court. Netanyahu’s wife, however, has been convicted of misusing funds.

President Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu worked together to create unprecedented alliances in the Mideast with their Abraham Accords, a document signed by Bahrain, Morocco, UAE, and Sudan in addition to Israel and the United States. The Abraham Accords is a treaty centered around peace and human dignity.
