NBA Power Rankings: Bucks, Nets, Suns & Lakers remain in top tier as Warriors creep up with strong first impression

You know what they say about first impressions, don’t you? Make a good one.

That’s kind of the gist of all expressions about first impressions. This is always the interesting part of the Power Rankings. What do we do after a couple of games for each team? Sometimes, I like to overreact in these Power Rankings after a couple of games. Occasionally, it will end up being a prescient look for the rest of the season, like when I dropped the Golden State Warriors to a bottom team during the first week or two of the 2019-2020 season. Sometimes, it will look completely asinine, like when the Cleveland Cavaliers get bumped up to a top team immediately.

One thing I’ve learned. A lot of you hate the early overreaction stick. So I’m going to avoid it… for now.

Instead, let’s just look at some first impressions after Week 1. Could be about the team or just one individual player or game. What caught my eye? What caught your eye? And do we make anything of it? Just a reminder, we’re breaking teams down into tiers this season throughout the Power Rankings.

Here are the six tiers that teams can fall into this season.

Rebuilding franchise – Self-explanatory

Tired-of-rebuilding franchise – They’re not trying to keep rebuilding but they’re just not good enough to avoid it.

Play-In Tournament gives them life – Normally, this team would be headed toward Tank-a-palooza, but the Play-In Tournament is keeping them alive.

Playoff hopeful – Too good to be firmly considered a Play-In Tournament team, but not good enough to really make noise in the postseason.

On the brink of contention – A piece away from believing they can win the title.
