It’s looking more and more like the 2019-20 NBA season will resume at some point in July. We’re just waiting for a final plan to be put forth from the Association to the players.
According to Milwaukee Bucks owner Marc Lasry, a decision on the resumption of the season could come next week. Per Lasry, the season will likely resume at Walt Disney World in Orlando.
The suspended NBA season
Back on March 11, the NBA halted operations after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the coronavirus. Despite multiple reports indicating optimism that the season could resume, we have not heard anything concrete. Per the Bucks owner, that could come next week.
There are some questions as it relates to how the season might look. The league would like to get some regular-season games in before the playoffs start. This is complicated by the fact that some teams are already pretty much out of playoff contention might not want to return to action amid the pandemic.
How the NBA season might look
Recent suggestions are that the NBA will go away from conference seeds and allow the top-14 teams in the Association into the playoffs. From that point, there would be a play-in for the bottom two seeds. It’s a way to entice other squads who are not currently in playoff positioning to actually play for something.
Previous suggestions were that the NBA could return within the confines of bubble cities at Walt Disney World in Florida and the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada. That’s now given way to reports that Orlando would ultimately become a single-host city.
Another report from John Hollinger of The Athletic suggests that a final vote could come to fruition during Friday’s NBA Board of Governors meeting. The process could very well be further along than the general public knows right now.
