Washington Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer left the game in the first inning Friday against the San Francisco Giants after throwing just 12 pitches.
Scherzer was seen stretching his lower half after his final pitch when Nationals manager Dave Martinez and team trainer Paul Lessard came out to the mound to check on him. The three-time Cy Young winner threw one practice pitch before wincing and walking off the mound. Paolo Espino entered for the Nationals in relief.
In 12 starts this season, Scherzer has a 2.22 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 77 1/3 innings.
