Nancy Pelosi Is Reportedly Going to Announce an Official Impeachment Inquiry

House Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) is reportedly set to announce on September 24 that the House of Representatives will begin impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump after years of calls for the move from members of Congress and civil rights groups. Anonymous Democrats told the Washington Post that Pelosi is slated to make an official announcement later today.

“As soon as we have the facts, we’re ready. Now that we have the facts, we’re ready,” Pelosi said Tuesday at an event hosted by The Atlantic, according to the Post. “For later today.”

The move came amid reports that Trump may have asked a Ukrainian leader to investigate 2020 Democratic candidate and former vice president Joe Biden. According to CNN, Trump initially denied that he had done so but then admitted to mentioning Biden and downplayed that part of his conversation.

The Washington Post report of an official move for impeachment appears to also confirm earlier reports from Tuesday that Pelosi was planning the announcement of a formal impeachment inquiry. Representative John Lewis (D-GA), a 32-year veteran of the House, was among those who elevated the issue ahead of the announcement in a speech on the House floor and on Twitter. According to CNN, Lewis is one of 160 House Democrats who, as of today, have called for impeachment.

According to CNN, Representative Al Green (D-NY) was the first to formally call for impeachment on the House floor in May 2017. That was followed by Representative Brad Sherman (D-CA) introducing articles of impeachment in July 2017, Green doing so in October 2017, and Representative Steve Cohen (D-TN) doing the same in November 2017.

Impeachment has received renewed attention after Democrats took back the House in the 2018 midterms, as the House is where impeachment proceedings begin, as outlined in the Constitution. Since those midterms, a new wave of first-term members of Congress has invigorated calls for impeachment, as exemplified by Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI), who said “We’re gonna impeach the motherf*cker” the day she was sworn in.

Tlaib has since been joined by the rest of the “Squad” — a group of four congresswomen, including Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ayanna Pressley (D-MA), and Ilhan Omar (D-MN), who have been the center of much attention on Capitol Hill since they were voted in.
