A 6-week-old Quarter Horse in Clay County, MN, was euthanized after post-mortem tests concluded the foal was positive for Equine Herpesvirus Myeloencephalopathy (EHM), reports the Minnesota Board of Animal Health.
A veterinarian who examined the foal noted that he had a hanging lower lip, was stumbling and once down was unable to rise on his own. These symptoms led to the decision to euthanize the horse.
A confirmation of EHM infection was given by the University of North Dakota Veterinary Diagnostic lab. It is the first EHM case in Minnesota since 2015. The farm where the foal resided has been placed under quarantine.
EHM is highly contagious and spread via nose-to-nose contact between horses or from contaminated items coming into contact with another equine.
