Michelle Wie announces she's taking the rest of the year off

Michelle Wie is shutting it down for the rest of the year. In an announcement posted on Twitter, Wie explained that she needs to take the time to let her lingering wrist injury heal.

“After doing everything I could to play this year, I have made the decision to take the rest of the year off from competitive golf,” she wrote. “My team and I believe that this will give me the best possible chance to finally get healthy. I can’t thank you all enough for your never ending love and support. Means the world to me.”

It was just over eight months ago that Wie revealed she’d had hand surgery and would be out for the remainder of the season. Though she attempted to play several times over the past five months, she only managed to get rounds in at four events, and only made the cut in one, February’s Honda LPGA Thailand, where she finished T-23. She withdrew from a few others, most notably the HSBC Women’s World Championship, Kia Classic, and U.S. Women’s Open.

Wie was feeling optimistic at the year’s third major, last week’s KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, but missed the cut after shooting rounds of 84 and 82. She was visibly emotional during a post-round interview after her first round, saying, “I’m not entirely sure how much more I have left in me.”

Wie turns 30 in October. She has five LPGA wins on her resume, which includes one major: the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open.
