Miami Heat have to decide how aggressive to be with their roster


Pat Riley wanted to be retired by now. The Miami Heat front office demigod wanted to get out around the time of the 2014 offseason. He was hoping to re-sign LeBron James, add some veteran role players around him, and prepare to leave the franchise in capable hands as they won more and more Larry O’Brien trophies. Instead, LeBron took his talents back to Cleveland in order to fulfill a promise once thought to be relinquished.

Let’s say LeBron had returned to Miami in the summer of 2014 and the Heat had reloaded the roster with those needed role players to help put them back in championship parades. Riley likely would have enjoyed a little bit more of that work-life, handed the keys over to Andy Elisburg and company, and then observed from afar with the occasional consultation, if needed. The now 75-year old man with a lunch pail full of championship rings would have gone out as a champion and the architect of the Heat’s ongoing dynasty.
