STRATFORD, Conn. (AP) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is planning to hold a public meeting on its plans to clean up about 50 acres of mud flats along the Housatonic River on the site of the Stratford Army Engine Plant.
The New Haven Register reports that the meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m., Dec. 10 at the Baldwin Center.
The corps is planning to dig up nearly 300,000 cubic yards of contaminated sediment. The most highly contaminated dirt, about 140,000 cubic yards, will be removed. About 130,500 cubic yards will be used to help redevelop the site.
The contaminants include PCBs, metals like arsenic, mercury and cadmium, and other dangerous substances.
The cleanup could cost an estimated $80 million.
The effort won’t involve the 76-acre former factory portion of the property.
