MCA showcasing startups, innovators at annual ‘Demo Day’ on June 26 – El Paso Herald-Post

The MCA Foundation’s Innovation Center will be hosting Demo Day 2019 on June 26, 2019 to showcase the startups and innovations being developed at the Cardwell Collaborative by the 2018-19 program cohort.

Startup companies, entrepreneurs, and inventors that have been incubating at the MCA Innovation Center will highlight their progress and future impact while competing for MCA prize funding.

Attendees will also get to enjoy a panel discussion on innovation ecosystems in different cities across the U.S. led by experts on life sciences innovation and university entrepreneurship:

  • Dan Wolf (moderator), Dewar Sloan, CEO & Co-Founder, providing guidance on key issues in healthcare technology, delivery and business models, along with advice and counsel on enterprise development in this dynamic era of healthcare reform
  • David Borkholder, Rochester Institute of Technology, Bausch and Lomb Professor of Microsystems Engineering, with adjunct appointments with the University of Rochester departments of Otolaryngology and Biomedical Engineering; he was a member of the DARPA Defense Sciences Research Council (DSRC) and former Chair of the NIH Bioengineering of Neuroscience, Vision, and Low Vision Technologies (BNVT) study section
  • Ken McLeod, Binghamton University, professor in the Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering, Director of the Clinical Science and Engineering Research Lab and former Entrepreneur in Residence having launched more than a dozen technology ventures, primarily in the field of medical devices

“El Paso’s innovation industry is continuing to take root due to the growing support provided to innovators and entrepreneurs as well as those innovators and entrepreneurs stepping up to take the risk of starting a high-tech venture,” explains MCA President Emma Schwartz.  “The MCA’s Demo Day celebrates all of the hard work done this year to grow our region’s Innovation Ecosystem.”

In October 2018, the MCA Innovation Center’s Startup and Innovator Programs launched to help both startup companies in our region as well as innovators and entrepreneurs looking for guidance before launching their businesses. This year’s program featured a robust curriculum on 36 topics ranging from business planning and operations, product development, intellectual property, and venture investment.

The program also featured several panel discussions and brought in a variety of business leaders and professionals from El Paso and the rest of the U.S. as guest speakers to share their knowledge and expertise with program participants.

“What impresses me the most about the entrepreneurs in our program is the rapid progress they make during the course of the program when they combine their talent with best practices and start down their paths to success,” says Jeff Fuchsberg, MCA Senior Director of Innovation.

Demo Day 2019 will be a great opportunity for the community to see the innovative talent the El Paso/Juarez region has to offer, and to learn about our region’s newest technology ventures and how the MCA Innovation Center supports our local innovators and entrepreneurs.

The event is sponsored by El Paso Electric and will be free to attend and open to the public. People can RSVP to Demo Day 2019 online.
