Manchester United legends were beat 3-1 by Liverpool Legends at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon after a brace from Mark Gonzalez won the game for the visitors.

The game, labelled the ‘Legends of the North’, was organised to raise funds for the Manchester United Foundation with a second leg to be played at Anfield next week.

With the likes of Jaap Stam, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher in the line-ups, there were high expectations for the charity fixture – which the game did well to meet.

Though there were no goals in the first-half, there was still much to cheer about. Dimitar Berbatov rolled back the years as he displayed his everlasting eye for goal, calling Liverpool’s Jerzy Dudek into action 10 minutes into the game.

Liverpool Legends fired back with chance of their own on the half hour mark when Patrice Evra was forced to clear the ball from his goal line after Maxi Rodriguez’s lofted effort looked to be heading into the net.

The patient fans who had sat waiting eagerly for a goal in the opening 45 minutes were rewarded almost immediately into the second-half.

Almost out of nowhere, Luis Garcia found himself through on goal before throwing a couple neat step-overs and slotting the ball into the empty net to break the deadlock.

United Legends hit back just three minutes later as Berbatov scored from the spot to level the game and get himself a well deserved goal.

The sides remained level until just after the hour mark when Mark Gonzalez stepped up to a free-kick and curled a beautiful effort past United’s Kevin Pilkington.

The retired Chilean midfielder was not done there as he went on to grab his second of the day in the dying moments of the game.

As the United Legends side pressed for an equalising goal, they were caught short at the back which allowed Garcia to play in Gonzalez who made no mistake in doubling his tally.

The Liverpool Legends now have a 3-1 advantage to take to Anfield with them in the fixture next week.
