Marcelino Pedroza Fractures Collarbone When Mount Sustains Catastrophic Injury At Fair Grounds

According to his agent Richie Price, jockey Marcelino Pedroza suffered a broken left collarbone as the result of a seventh race spill at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, La., on Thursday.

Jim’s Silverbullet suffered a catastrophic injury at the top of the stretch and unseated Pedroza in the process. Mitchell Murrill, aboard rival Max Pandowdy, and Robby Albarado who rode Awe Patriot, were both dislodged from their mounts when trying to avoid Jim’s Silverbullet. Murrill took off his remaining mount in race eight and is listed day-to-day. Albarado finished out the card.

“He (Pedroza) wants to heal as quickly as possible, so we are awaiting word from the doctor (at Tulane Medical Center) on possible surgery,” Price said. “We are looking at being out the standard six to eight weeks. We are hoping he can return towards the end of the (Fair Grounds) meet, sometime in March.”

With 18 wins from 139 mounts, Pedroza currently sits sixth in the Fair Grounds’ jockey standings.
