Maple Leafs’ Auston Matthews planning to make season debut Monday vs. Rangers

Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews plans to make his 2021-22 debut on Monday against the Rangers, he said on Sunday. Matthews missed Toronto’s first three games as he continued to recover from offseason wrist surgery.

Matthews practiced in a regular blue jersey on Sunday and took reps with the Leafs’ top power-play unit. The Leafs star missed the preseason after having surgery on Aug. 13. He returned to practice on Sept. 28.

The 24-year-old led the NHL in goals last season with 41 in 52 games. Toronto is 2-1 without him to begin this season, including a win over the Senators on Saturday.
