Manchester City 1-0 Chelsea: De Bruyne’s brilliance, Lukaku and Alonso struggle, and City’s title seems inevitable


Manchester City cruised to a 1-0 win over rivals Chelsea to take a significant step closer to another Premier League title.

Kevin De Bruyne’s superb individual goal in the second half secured the three points for the home side and was the least Manchester City deserved.

The 1-0 scoreline was the same margin of victory that Manchester City achieved at Stamford Bridge in September. They dominated for long periods just like they did four months ago.

It means Pep Guardiola’s side have moved 13 points clear of Chelsea at the top of the table and are very strong favourites to retain their crown.

De Bruyne magic shows his enduring value

Ilkay Gundogan has been Guardiola’s go-to man for a couple of years now, way before his scoring run at the start of last year, and there’s a very persuasive argument that he and Bernardo Silva are City’s best midfield two, ahead of Rodri.

Interestingly, Gundogan has missed a few games over the last month or so, which may be related to a back complaint. However, the reason for his omission today is probably due to the type of game that Guardiola was expecting.
