LSU baseball hires Arizona’s Jay Johnson as head coach: Sources

Why Johnson?

Brody Miller, LSU beat writer: It’s been a long search involving multiple near deals, and Johnson was not the first, second or third choice, but he represents a good portion of what LSU wants: Youth, offense and the ability to build.

Johnson helped build San Diego into a major force as an assistant, then turned Nevada into a conference champ by Year 2 and took Arizona to two College World Series appearances in the five full seasons he coached, all of which while putting together juggernaut offenses. He’ll have more to work with in Baton Rouge.

LSU’s 2022 outlook

Miller: The first battle for Johnson will be convincing players to stay, but if he can, he could have a loaded offense in 2022 behind rising sophomore superstars in Dylan Crews and Tre Morgan. Both could be first-round picks in 2023.

The offense is there, but it’s possible LSU will lose its entire starting pitching rotation. That means Johnson will need to get a staff together quickly and make some key signings that can pitch right away.
