On March 1, the Edmonton Oilers claimed goaltender Alex Stalock on waivers from the Minnesota Wild. For an organization that ran with one goalie (Mikko Koskinen) through the first three weeks of the season (due to an injury to veteran Mike Smith), adding a third veteran option made good sense.

It could mean something else. Stalock is nearing the end of his two-week quarantine and should begin practicing with the Oilers in the coming week. Stalock may see his first start with the Oilers during the final week of March.

At that point, general manager Ken Holland should have three healthy goaltenders on the extended roster. He will also have room to wheel and could pursue a longer-term option in net.
