"Love, Simon" Spinoff Series "Love, Victor" Will Be on Hulu, Not Disney+

The previously confirmed Love, Simon television spinoff, titled Love, Victor, has found a new streaming service home. Originally set to air on Disney+, Love, Victor will now air on Hulu, and The Hollywood Reporter alleges that the switch is due to some of the subject matter the series explores.

According to THR, Love, Victor is scheduled to premiere in June, a purposeful decision that has the show’s release date coinciding with Pride Month. The series itself will focus on Victor, portrayed by Michael Cimino, as the newest member of Creekwood High School’s student body. However, sources with THR said that the show contained themes that were “more adult” than Disney+ felt comfortable with including on its streaming platform. Those topics include alcohol use, marital issues, and sexual exploration. Sources with Indiewire reportedly said the show’s exploration of LGBTQ+ themes had nothing to do with the move.

THR reported Disney+ felt the show would be a better fit for Hulu, as the platform has already released other young adult content in the past, including PEN15 and Looking for Alaska. Disney reportedly expressed concern that the show “would not resonate” with audience members that included families with young kids. Disney+ had made a similar move with the recent debut of High Fidelity, IndieWire notes.

Although viewers will have to wait until June to see whether the television adaptation contains the same powerful messaging as 2018’s Love, Simon (which starred Nick Robinson in the title role), Variety reports that one member of the Love, Simon cast is returning. Nick himself will serve as narrator for the series, while new actors including James Martinez, Ana Ortiz, Isabella Ferreira, and Mateo Fernandez will star alongside Michael.
