It was all about the trip in Saturday’s Grade 2 Seabiscuit Handicap, Jose Valdivia, Jr. manufactured a perfect one for 6-year-old gelding Next Shares. Riding the rail around the far turn, the son of Arch Arch Arch got to the lead in mid-stretch with enough left to hold off the late bid from unlucky 7-5 favorite Sacred Life by a half-length on the wire. Trained by Richard Baltas, the 27-1 longshot Next Shares ran 1 1/16 miles over Del Mar’s “good” turf course in 1:42.00.
Bred in Kentucky by Buck Pond Farm, Next Shares is out of the Evansville Slew mare Two Dot Slew. A Grade 1 winner at Keeneland over good turf last fall, the gelding improved his overall record to seven wins from 29 starts with earnings of over $1.6 million.
