Peter Redekop’s 5-year-old Anyportinastorm blitzes the competition in the Budweiser
Fifty-six horses have been nominated to the inaugural Championship Sunday at Emerald Downs, featuring four stakes worth an aggregate $350,000 on August 11.
The $200,000 Longacres Mile (G3) leads with 21 nominations while the $50,000 Emerald Distaff (10), $50,000 Muckleshoot Derby (154) and $50,000 Washington Oaks (11) also drew double-digit nominations. The latter three races are all 1 1/8 miles in distance.
Local stalwart Anyportinastorm heads nominations to the 84th renewal of the Longacres Mile. A 5-year-old by City Zip, Anyportinastorm was untested while rolling to easy victories in the Governor’s Stakes and Budweiser Stakes, running meet fastest times at 6 furlongs (1:07.54) and 6 ½ furlongs (1:14.35).
More Power to Him and El Huerfano, first and second in the Mt. Rainer Stakes at 1 1/16 miles, and Oh Marvelous Me, a top three finisher in all three local stakes this season, also are nominated to The Mile.
Southern California fixture John Sadler nominated a quartet of runners—Curlin Rules, Fawree, Higher Power and Horse Greedy. Higher Power, younger brother of multiple graded winner Alternation, finished fifth in the Gold Cup (G1) last month at Santa Anita and was second in the Wickerr Stakes on turf last week at Del Mar. Fawree is a mile specialist, compiling a 4-1-0 record in five career starts at eight furlongs.
Solid Wager, an 8-year-old currently based in Kentucky, is the top career earner nominated with $857,970, and won the Toboggan Stakes (G3) in January at Aqueduct.
He’s the Reason and Brave Nation, first and second in the Lieutenant Governor’s handicap two weeks ago, head the Canadian contingent.
Weights for the Longacres Mile and Emerald Distaff will be released Sunday, August 4, and entries for all four races will be taken Wednesday, August 7.Supplementary nominations for The Mile ($5,000) and Distaff ($1,500) close Saturday, August 3, while supplementary nominations for the Derby ($1,500) and Oaks ($1,500) close Wednesday, August 7.
A special $0.50 all stakes pick four will be offered on the Championship Sunday races.
