Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp praises ‘wonderful’ Trent Alexander-Arnold for ’emotional’ late winner against Aston Villa and hails right-back’s character after being left out of Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad

  • Trent Alexander-Arnold enjoyed a perfect ending to a turbulent week
  • The Liverpool defender bounced back from his England omission at Arsenal
  • But the 21-year-old struggled against Real Madrid in their defeat in midweek
  • He reversed the narrative again with his stunning late strike against Aston Villa

Jurgen Klopp hailed Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ’emotional’ late winner against Aston Villa, as he enjoyed a perfect ending to a turbulent week in front of national team boss Gareth Southgate.

The 21-year-old right-back had bounced back perfectly from his England omission with a brilliant performance against Arsenal. He then came crashing down in midweek as he struggled against Real Madrid in the Champions League.

He reversed the narrative again on Saturday with his stunning late strike to end Liverpool‘s horror run at Anfield.

Klopp said: ‘It was a wonderful goal. It was our best for ages emotionally-wise.

The German hailed the youngster’s character but was keen not to inflame the debate over his place in Southgate’s party for this summer’s Euros.

‘It’s been quite a week for Trent but life is like this, football is like this,’ he added ‘We don’t hide that in Madrid he was involved in the second goal they scored.

‘Trent wants to be in the squad but is not really bothered about the discussion around him. He is a wonderful player — Gareth agrees.

‘To be in the England squad you have to play outstanding football and Trent did this very often at a very young age. There will be tough decisions for Gareth, not only in that position.’
