LIV Golf LIVE: Leaderboard and Day 2 scores as Dustin Johnson holds on to outright lead at Pumpkin Ridge

Carlos Ortiz leads Dustin Johnson by one shot after first round at LIV Portland

Dustin Johnson put on a brilliant performance for the fans on Day 2 at Pumpkin Ridge in a round of golf that saw him record eight birdies and at one stage reach 10 under par. A few poor iron shots and missed putts on the back nine put a dent in his round and he had to settle for a round of 68 which was enough to take a share of the lead into the final day of the second invitational event of the LIV Golf series.

The overnight leader, Carlos Ortiz, was playing alongside Johnson and only a minor blip on the 10th hole saw him give a shot back to the course. He completed his second round in an impressive 69 to finish level with Johnson after sinking a monster putt for birdie on the 18th green.

The pair will tee off alongside Branden Grace for the final round after an up and down round from the South African ended on a high with four consecutive birdes to bring him within two shots of the leading pair. Fellow South Africa Justin Harding is just one shot further back before a host of players sit waiting to make a move at four-under par including big name Americans Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed.

The glorious weather conditions and accessible greens provided another low-scoring day yet there remains a perpetual cloud over proceedings due to the contentious nature of this rebel tour and a looming court case after 16 players have threatened the DP World Tour with legal action unless their sanctions for competing in the first LIV Golf event are rescinded.

LIV Golf Portland Invitational: Day 2

Dustin Johnson almost put on a masterclass in front of the fans on Day 2 at Pumpkin Ridge in a round of golf that saw him roll home eight birdies and at one stage reach 10 under par. A few poor iron shots and missed putts on the back nine put a dent in his round and he had to settle for another four-under 68 – his second such round in a row – and a share of the lead in the second invitational event of the LIV Golf series.

The overnight leader, Carlos Ortiz, was playing alongside Johnson and it was too his credit that he didn’t get overawed by the flurry of birdies his playing partner was knocking in. A minor blip on the 10th hole saw Ortiz give a shot back to the course but he completed his second round in an impressive 69 to draw level with Johnson after sinking a monster putt for birdie on the 18th green.

The pair will tee off alongside Branden Grace for the final round after an up and down round from the South African ended on a high with four consecutive birdes to bring him within two shots of the leading pair. Fellow South Africa Justin Harding is just one shot further back before a host of players sit waiting to make a move at four under including Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed.

Johnson’s brilliant two rounds have helped his 4 Aces team into a four shot lead in the team tournament and they’re being chased byt the Stingers who were victorious in the first invitational event at Centurian Club.

The stage is delicately poised for the final round. Will Dustin Johnson go on to claim the big money purse? Will it be Carlos Ortiz or will someone storm through the pack in tomorrow’s final round?

And how will the team event conclude? The 4 Aces have had a firm grip on proceedings throughout the opening two days but on Day 3 of LIV Golf all that can change.

The Portland Invitational is set up nicely for a barnstorming conclusion tomorrow night.

“I played really well and all day hit it well.” said Dustin Johnson when he was asked how he felt the second round went. “Two three-putts on the back nine gets you a little frustrated and not birdieing 17 too.

!I’m really happy with the way I’m swinging it and tomorrow I need to go out and do the same thing.

“All in all I’m very happy with how I played.”

Carlos Ortiz gave his post-round reaction, explaining what it was like to play with an in form Dustin Johnson. He said: “I felt like I played very solid and put myself in good positions. It’s a good golf course, if you put yourself in the fairway you have a chance of scoring low.

“It’s also nice when you’re playing with guys who are playing good. [Dustin Johnson] was unbelievable so it pushes you to be better. I enjoyed it and we’re in a good position for tomorrow.”

Dustin Johnson and Carlos Ortiz finished their rounds in a little over four and a half hours which is about 40 minutes faster than the day’s play yesterday.

That’s a rapid round of golf and not every player has matches that pace. There are still a few guys finishing off the round including Brooks Koepka who is trying to take advantage of the par-5 first hole.

What a putt from the Mexican on 18 to get himself to eight under and take a share of the lead into the clubhouse. It was a monster putt, right across the green and the Ortiz gives it the old fist pump when the ball drops.

Dustin Johnson has a birdie putt of his own but he slides it past and has to settle for a par.

Johnson and Ortiz will head into the final round at (-8).

Brooks Koepka’s found the water on the 18th! He gets incredible lucky as he ball bounce inside the the Out of Bounds line before landing in the splash.

That means he is only penalised one shot instead of two.

Koepka takes a two-club length drop and chips the ball with a few inches of the hole. He taps it home and leaves the hole with a damage limiting bogey.
