Lionel Messi: La Liga investigating possible Barcelona coronavirus breach at barbecue

What happened?

It was reported in the Spanish press that Messi, 33, held the gathering ahead of Barcelona’s match against Atletico Madrid this weekend.

He was joined by several of his teammates as well as their wives and girlfriends.

Marca have reported that Barcelona’s squad could be heard singing ‘‘Campeones!’ at the gathering, ahead of the crunch La Liga fixture on Saturday.

Barcelona are currently sat third, two points behind league leaders Atletico with four fixtures remaining.

What’s the problem?

La Liga are now investigating whether the gathering breached rules that prevent gatherings of more than six.

Barcelona admit that the gathering took place but do not believe it broke COVID-19 rules because everybody present was part of the same ‘bubble’.

The barbecue was meanwhile held outside with tables separated to ensure social distancing.

The Catalan authorities are also investigating whether any rules have been breached. Catalan regional government spokesperson Meritxell Budo said on Tuesday: “The public health agency will study the case”.

What else do I need to know?

Atletico’s players have also enjoyed a gathering ahead of the crunch fixture at Camp Nou.

It has been reported in the Spanish media that theirs is not under investigation, however, because they notified the relevant authorities in advance.

What is the state of play in La Liga?

It is all to play for with two matchdays remaining.

Atletico currently sit top with a two point lead over Real Madrid and Barcelona. Atletico travel to Barcelona this weekend before matches against Real Sociedad, Osasuna and Valladolid.
