Adventurer’s Delight: Rivian R1S will serve as the model for Lincoln’s new SUV.
After months of speculation, Ford has finally revealed what it plans to collaborate on with Rivian Automotive as part of the auto maker’s original investment in the budding electric vehicle builder.
Lincoln, Ford’s luxury brand, will work with the Plymouth, Michigan-based EV maker to develop a fully electric sport utility vehicle. Though tight-lipped about the size, range and price—the “little” details—were not shared, the yet to be named SUV will join the seven-passenger Aviator and five-passenger Corsair plug-in hybrid SUVs in Lincolns stable of sport utilities, further reinforcing the company’s commitment to electrification.
“Working with Rivian marks a pivotal point for Lincoln as we move toward a future that includes fully electric vehicles,” said Joy Falotico, president, The Lincoln Motor Company in a press release. “This vehicle will take Quiet Flight to a new place–zero emissions, effortless performance and connected and intuitive technology.
The new luxury electric vehicle to its lineup as production of the MKZ sedan ends later this year in order for the Hermosillo Assembly Plant in Mexico to prepare for the production of new Ford vehicles. According to Scaringe, the new vehicle will be assembled in Rivian’s redeveloped plant in Normal, Michigan.
The Lincoln battery electric vehicle will be built off of Rivian’s flexible skateboard platform and is part of Ford Motor Company’s planned equity investment in Rivian. This all-new vehicle also is part of Ford’s previously announced investment of more than $11.5 billion into electrification, which includes the Mustang Mach-E and a fully electric version of the best-selling F-150 pickup.
