A major face of American high school hockey history has passed away.
Bill Belisle, a 32-time state champion with the Mount Saint Charles Academy hockey team, died on Wednesday at the age of 92.
A Korean War veteran, Belisle assumed the job as bench boss in 1975 and ultimately led the school that he graduated from in 1948 to 26-straight championships from 1978 until 2003. Among the star players Belisle coached were
A member of the United States Hockey Hall of Fame, Belisle coached, among other players, 1983 No. 1 pick Brian Lawton, 1995 No. 1 pick Bryan Berard and 1993 Stanley Cup champion and two-time Olympian Mathieu Schneider.
“Personally, I remember Bill from my time as a student, then as a teacher and coach, and again when I returned to Mount as president,” said Alan Tenreiro, president of Mount Saint Charles Academy. “He was always there as a guide and was an exceptional mentor to students and staff, and to family and friends. The world has lost one of its greatest coaches, and Mount will feel the loss for decades to come.”
