LeBrun: NHL GMs updated on 2021-22 season start date, Olympics, draft. Plus, Zach Hyman contract comparables


A date for puck drop next season. That’s a wonderful thing to think about. Especially with Seattle entering the fray as the 32nd team.

The NHL for the first time shared on the general managers’ call Wednesday its hopeful target date to start the 2021-22 season next fall: Oct. 12. Which is about a week later than normal.

Training camps would open Sept. 22, sources on the call confirmed.

Again, that’s if all goes smoothly and there are no delays as the world tries to get vaccinated and power through this pandemic. But it’s good to know there’s a date to shoot for.

What the league can’t yet say for sure, and it didn’t come up on the call Wednesday, was when exactly the Stanley Cup playoffs would begin next month.

The league wants to wait a bit longer before having to finalize that call.

I do believe they can start some playoffs games involving U.S.
