Landon Collins will remain at strong safety for Washington

As Landon Collins continues to recover from a torn Achilles that prematurely ended his season last year, there is much debate about what position he will play for the Washington Football Team upon his return. Wednesday Washington’s defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio put the speculation to rest.

Speaking with Julie Donaldson, Washington’s senior vice president of media and content, Del Rio said Collins will remain at safety.

“He’s a strong safety, working his butt off and getting in shape,” Del Rio stated.

“I asked him to be just a little bit lighter this year,” Del Rio said. “I think another year in the system, understanding what we do, how we do it, making sure he’s in the right place at the right time and that he can be the impactful player that we think he’s capable of being.”

Since signing a six-year, $84 million deal in 2019, Collins has seemingly struggled at strong safety for Washington. Collins’ struggles in 2020 were highlighted in how well seventh-round rookie Kamren Curl thrived in place of him.

As for Curl, who has become a fan favorite, Collins’ return will force him into a similar role he had played prior to Collins’ Week 7 injury.

“It means Kam will be playing like he did last year, whether he plays in the Buffalo nickel, whether he plays free safety, whether he spells Landon, however, he creates his time,” Del Rio said.

Collins is a strong defender against the run. His strengths are laminated with him as an in-the-box safety. But, he his pass coverage is his a glaring weakness. Hence, why there was a lot of speculation, mostly from media and fans, about Collins shifting to linebacker.

Collins balked at the idea. However, head coach Ron Rivera seemingly left the door open with his response. A report surfaced Washington talked to Collins about switching to linebacker. Yet, it appears Del Rio never entertained the thought of Collins switching positions.

Hopefully, all works out for all involved. Collins returns to 100% health and becomes the strong safety Washington hoped he would be. All the while, Curl gets his deserved snaps whether at free safety, nickel corner or spelling Collins.
