Lakers reportedly have interest in Carmelo Anthony

The Los Angeles Lakers are in the midst of a major roster reconfiguration following this season’s disappointing finish.

A clear alternative suitor has emerged for Dennis Schroder – so he’s likely a goner. Similarly, Alex Caruso’s blunt assessment of his future in L.A. has made his status perilous at best. And that’s to say nothing of Andre Drummond, whose recent Instagram post explicitly laid out what his plans are.

Given all the talent that the Lakers are about to lose, the front office has rapidly been turning its attention to acquirable assets – be it via free agency or trade.

A potential trade between the Lakers and Washington Wizards for Russell Westbrook has been gaining a lot of attention over the past week.

In addition to that, last year’s champs seem to be a legit contenders for Carmelo Anthony’s services.

According to Lindsey Wisniewski of Yahoo Sports, a scenario where Anthony ends up in L.A. is very feasible.

“Melo joining the Lakers wouldn’t be a surprise,” she wrote.

“Since high school, he and James have been best friends and two of the greatest players in the NBA. With Melo now 37 and LeBron 36, the two could team up in LA so Melo can finally go out with a ring of his own.”

Adding more fuel to the fire is a recent report from NBA insider Evan Massey suggesting that the Lakers had very legitimate interest in bringing Anthony in.

“Spoke to a source that stated that the Lakers are expected to pursue Anthony in free agency,” he wrote.

After experiencing a bizarre blacklisting following his failed runs with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets, Anthony found new life with the Portland Trail Blazers.

This past year, Anthony averaged 13.4 points on 42.1% shooting from the field and 40.9% shooting from beyond the arc. The three-point percentage, in particular, was the best of his career. In addition, he chipped in 3.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.

Given that a Kyle Kuzma trade is imminent, Anthony could fill a very necessary role for LA as an offensive playmaker off the bench next season.

Obviously, there are still some hurdles to get through, but the 37-year-old joining the Lakers would make a lot of sense.

Will it actually happen? Time will tell. Should it? Absolutely.
