Kyrie Irving’s no-show, David Letterman’s cameo and LaMarcus Aldridge’s return: Inside Nets media day

Kyrie Irving was a late no-show. David Letterman was a credentialed member of the media asking Kevin Durant about his initials. James Harden doesn’t seem to be in a rush to sign a contract extension with Brooklyn. And LaMarcus Aldridge is back from what he called “a five-month All-Star break.”

The Brooklyn Nets’ first media day in two years lived up to the hype and then some, as most of the team met with reporters in person for the first time since March 2020. The last time the Nets met with the media in person at their home arena, Jacque Vaughn was the team’s interim coach and Durant was limited to three-on-three games as he rehabbed his torn Achilles. But as the COVID-19 pandemic began to hover over the world in March 2020, the Nets felt its impact again on Monday.

Irving’s vaccination status, which isn’t publicly known, was the hot-button issue as the star point guard was a late cancellation to media day because of health and safety protocols. New York City’s mandate is that professional athletes be vaccinated in order to play sports indoors. If Irving, or any Nets player, isn’t vaccinated, they could miss at least half a season, plus games against the Knicks and Golden State Warriors, who play in San Francisco, which has a similar policy to New York.
