Kyrie Irving will likely undergo shoulder surgery. What that means for the Nets


Nets point guard Kyrie Irving is likely to undergo a procedure on his right shoulder, league sources told The Athletic’s Shams Charania. The expectation over the past several days has been that Irving will miss the remainder of the season, according to sources.

The news comes after coach Kenny Atkinson said on Tuesday that Irving had healed from his right knee sprain, which he suffered in Washington on Feb. 1, but was seeing a shoulder specialist after his right shoulder had flared up again. Irving missed 26 games starting in mid-November due to a right shoulder impingement and said on Jan. 4 that there was also bursitis in the shoulder.

Irving originally hurt his shoulder on a drive to the basket against the New Orleans Pelicans on Nov. 4, but said he overworked himself prior to that point in order to make up for time lost during the preseason when he suffered a facial injury in practice.
