“Because they give away a lot of money for 20th.”
Kevin Kisner produced the quote of the week at the Sony Open in Hawaii when he uttered those words at his Wednesday pre-tournament news conference.
He was discussing how he sets up his playing schedule and admitted he doesn’t visit venues where he doesn’t feel like he has a chance to win but he will still play some tournaments because the money is so good.
Kisner is a realist. He knows some courses don’t work in his favor but he can still pocket a nice chunk of change for a week’s worth of work.
At the Sony, he’s making his visit worthwhile, as he’ll cash another check. But just barely.
Kisner played the back nine of the Waialae Country Club first and heading down the homestretch, he was in real danger of missing the cut, which came in at 4 under.

Kisner was 1 under after a bogey on the 6th hole, but he birdied the 7th hole to inch closer to the money. After a par on the 8th hole, time was running out. Good thing he had a par 5 to finish on because he needed an eagle.
Facing a putt from 17 feet, 3 inches, he drained it for a 3 and a second-round 67, making the cut on the number.
Kisner is tied for 57th, last among all those who made the cut, heading into Saturday’s third round.
But he’s got some work to do to finish 20th, which pays out $87,450 this week.
