Kentucky Derby Consignor Standings Presented By Keeneland: Tiz The Law A Local Triumph For Sequel New York

The road to the 2020 Kentucky Derby has been historically amorphous, both in its schedule and the horses at the top of the division, but one pillar of consistency throughout the process has been Tiz the Law.

The Constitution colt further cemented that notion with an assertive victory in the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 28 at Gulfstream Park, carrying the banner not only for owner Sackatoga Stable and the colt’s home state of New York, but for his consignor, Sequel New York, who moved up to the third spot on this week’s Kentucky Derby Consignor Standings.

Tiz the Law was handled by Sequel New York at the 2018 Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearlings Sale, but the operation’s experience with the colt and his bloodline reach well before that.

The colt was bred in New York by Twin Creeks Farm, which campaigned sire Constitution in partnership with WinStar Farm and purchased Tiz the Law’s dam, the Grade 2-winning Tiznow mare Tizfiz, for $125,000 at the 2014 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale.

Though based in Kentucky, the Twin Creeks operation has maintained a significant presence in New York, standing former runners Mission Impazible and Destin at Sequel New York’s stallion operation in Hudson, N.Y., and boarding a string of mares at the farm to take advantage of the state’s lucrative incentive programs.

“Twin Creeks has been phenomenal to not just support Mission Impazible, but Destin, who we stand here in New York,” said Sequel’s Becky Thomas. “When they owned Graydar, they supported him and we had New York-bred Graydars for them, as well as New York-bred Constitutions. They’ve utilized the New York program to be able to help their freshman sires wherever they stand.”

Tizfiz was purchased to support the Twin Creeks stallions, and she was sent to be a part of Grade 1 winner Constitution’s first book of mares during her second full year in the broodmare band. She was sent back to New York to foal out, and produced the future Grade 1 winner.

Though he was born in New York, Tiz the Law spent much of his young life at Twin Creeks’ base in Versailles, Ky.

As the colt grew, and the aim became to sell him at the New York-Bred sale, Thomas noticed things about his physical that would bode well for his next steps on the racetrack.

“He was a medium-sized horse, but the biggest thing was he had good length in his back,” she said. “When you’re not a really big, scopey horse, but you’ve got good length in your back, those are horses I look forward to watching on the track, because they cover so much ground.”

Furthermore, Tiz the Law had a page to back him up. His dam is a full-sister to Grade 3 winner and sire Fury Kapcori, and fourth dam Evil Elaine is the pivot point for family members including Horse of the Year Favorite Trick, Grade 1 winner Moonshine Memories, and Grade 2 winner Favorite Tale.

Tiz the Law was cataloged as Hip 311 at the yearling sale, but he was part of a crowded first class for Constitution, with seven in the book over the auction’s two days. Standing out amongst that group alone, much less in a renewal of the sale that was one of the strongest ever from top to bottom, was going to be a challenge.

“He was an attractive horse,” Thomas said. “He had good length to his body, smart. For a first year sire, the market tends to evaluate so tough. The yearlings sold okay, but some of them not so good, so we were quite pleased with $110,000, but it was representative of the fact that he was nice.”

Jack Knowlton of Sackatoga Stables was the last man standing when the hammer fell for Tiz the Law, setting into motion a series of events that has the colt poised to join the list of all-time New York-breds.

It’s a familiar story for the operation, who purchased dual classic winner Funny Cide out of the Fasig-Tipton New York-Bred Yearlings Sale in 2001 and took him to the top of the all-time New York-bred earnings list – a position Funny Cide held until only recently when he was finally eclipsed by Mind Your Biscuits.
