India’s 1983 World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev slipped to the fifth position after carding 10-over 82 in the second round at the IGU All India Senior golf Championship here on Thursday. (Read more sports stories here)
The 56-year-old former cricketer was tied first on Wednesday with Gangesh Khaitan, winner of 2014 All India Senior Championship and 1982 Asian Games gold medalist, and 1996 Arjuna Awardee Amit Luthra after the opening day.
However, both Dev and Luthra slipped with Khaitan finishing two strokes behind new leader IPS Mann, who exhibited a phenomenal game and carded three birdies and five bogeys for the two days total of nine-over 153.
While Luthra is three strokes behind, Dev will have a lot of catching up to do on the last day on Friday as he has been pushed five strokes behind Mann.
Interestingly, Mann, who had helped India win a bronze medal at the Asia-Pacific Senior Championship, five years ago, was at the fifth spot on Wednesday.
In the mid-Amateur Championship happening simultaneously, Delhi’s Vikram Rana maintained his lead after shooting three-over 75 for a total of eight-over 224.
Noida’s Simarjeet Singh matched Rana’s score but finished one stroke behind for a total of nine-over 225. Chandigarh’s HS Kang slipped to third position from second at 13-over 229.
Players, who finish in top six, will form a team and will be sent for the Asia-Pacific Senior Amateur Championship that will be played at Qingdao Golf Club in China from October 14-16, 2015.
