Kamala Harris's Turkey Tips Are Inspiring TikTokers to Cook Like a VP This Thanksgiving

Imagine getting Thanksgiving Day tips from Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Well, that’s exactly what Washington Post reporter Jonathan Capehart did in 2019 long before the California senator had her election win alongside Joe Biden. Last November, Jonathan got Kamala’s advice on how to properly brine and prepare a turkey ahead of the holidays to pass along to his husband. Oh, and did we mention Kamala was simultaneously getting ready to go on air for an interview?

According to Kamala’s advice, a “dry brine is easier” but if you have time to do a wet brine, “that’s fine.” She recommends covering the turkey with water, salt, and sugar, and adding a few bay leaves, peppercorns, and orange slices. If you opt for a dry brine, make sure you start 24 to 48 hours in advance. The future VP also suggests covering the bird in kosher salt and fresh black pepper. She said to “lather that baby up” on the outside and the cavity before adding chopped thyme and rosemary under the skin with some butter. Finish it off with a nice big bottle of “cheap white wine” to baste with.

Voilà! Turkey that’s Kamala-approved. Despite the video being over a year old, people on TikTok are embracing the politician’s tips in a new way this year. Check out the video below to see it play out IRL. There’s still time to cook like Kamala this year — including trying out her signature cornbread dressing recipe!
