Joshua Bassett Just Admitted He Has the Hots for Harry Styles

Joshua Bassett, star of Disney+’s High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and the possible subject of many a melancholy suburban car ride, may or may not have just come out.

In a video for Clevver News, the 20-year-old answered fan questions, including why he admires Harry Styles. “Who doesn’t think Harry Styles is cool? Also, he’s hot, you know. He’s very charming too. A lot of things,” Bassett says.

He’s got a point. Truly, who doesn’t think Styles is cool? As Oprah Winfrey once said, “I’ve never heard this from any gay person.”

After a pause, Bassett adds, “This is also my coming out video I guess, uhh…” Now this, an awkward, light-hearted admission of gayness, I have heard from many a gay person.

Bassett’s comments about “coming out” are making the rounds online, as is often the case whenever a celebrity announces they identify as queer. Noted stan Twitter paper of record Pop Crave tweeted that Bassett had “come out as queer” in the interview. It’s important to note Bassett didn’t say he was “queer.” In fact, he didn’t say at all how he identifies.

This, of course, led many extremely online gays to weigh in on whether or not Bassett was joking in “coming out.” Quickly scrolling through the comments, it’s clear some thought Bassett coming out couldn’t possibly be real, given his alleged relationships with female pop stars. (People can be bisexual!) Others seemed to think the casual nature of the announcement couldn’t possibly mean it’s serious. (Coming out doesn’t have to be an event if you don’t want it to!)

Here’s something those who feel the need to call Bassett’s admission a “joke” should consider: stop doing that! Yes, queerbaiting by celebrities, particularly among pop stars, is a common occurrence. But it’s not our business to decide the sincerity of Bassett’s comments. It’d be rude to assume he wasn’t telling the truth, just as it’s gauche to decide the specificities of his identity based on one off-handed comment. How the dude identifies is not up for us to litigate.

Likewise, the validity of Bassett’s comment does not prove that his alleged role in the ”Drivers License” drama is fake. Bassett could identity as queer (again, he has not said he does) and still have possibly dated his HSMTMTS costar Olivia Rodrigo and rumoredly broken up with her for Sabrina Carpenter.

Who knows? Not me and not you…unless you are Joshua Bassett, and you are reading this article. In which case, welcome to the LGBTQ community.
