Jordan Henderson injury: England midfielder to be involved in Romania game says Gareth Southgate

What did Southgate say?

Southgate said: “The plan, as it was on Wednesday, is that he’ll be involved in the game.

“The last few days of training have been positive for him.”

What’s the nature of Henderson’s injury?

The Liverpool captain underwent groin surgery at the end of February and has not featured for club or country since.

The last match Henderson appeared in was during Liverpool’s 2-0 loss against Everton on February 20.

England’s 1-0 win against Austria at the Riverside Stadium on Wednesday was set to be Henderson’s return to action but the 30-year-old missed out after complaining of discomfort on the morning of the match.

Earlier on Saturday, Henderson trained with the rest of the England squad ahead of the warm-up friendly against Romania on Sunday.

How important is he to England?

Southgate’s strongest starting XI would most likely include Henderson.

The lack of options available at central midfield is a potential selection dilemma for England, particularly as Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips have had their own recent injury concerns.

Henderson’s experience is also a crucial asset for England’s youthful squad. His 58 caps are the most out of any player in the 26-man squad and has represented his nation in four previous major international tournaments.

What about other injuries?

Southgate also gave an update on injured Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, saying: “With any injury it’s important to predict 100 per cent.

“The medical team are pleased with his progress, especially the last couple of days. We know there’s always that risk but all of the guide is that he should be available.”

On Jadon Sancho, who missed the Austria match through illness, Southgate said the Borussia Dortmund winger had recovered from his ailment.
