John Beilein has always been his own man, and this is where it leaves him


That John Beilein remains one of the finest minds in basketball remains inarguable. That Beilein has done innumerable good things for people is still a matter of fact. That Beilein has done things the right way, by all measures of a rulebook, is commendable.

Beilein is, though, first and foremost, his own man. It accounts for his defiant rise through the coaching ranks, from a nobody to a somebody. It also accounts for a high degree of pride, or perhaps ego, and the staunch belief that his way works as long as everyone around him subscribes to it.

And there, more than anywhere else, is most likely where you will find the fatal flaw of Beilein’s dalliance in the NBA.
