Johanna Konta marches into Eastbourne third round fuelled by Mum’s breakfast

Playing the tournament on her own doorstep, where her parents have had the same house since she was 18, brings a few home comforts for the British no. 1.

And Greek world no. 32 Maria Sakkari’s hopes of an upset were soon toast as Konta took 97 minutes to win 6-4, 7-6.

“I get to spend some time with my parents, which is nice,” Konta said.

“Yeah, I mean, the courts here are beautiful. It’s nice just to be able to go home.

“Being here gives me home comforts, which is nice.

“My mum makes me breakfast, which is nice.

“I had some fruit salad this morning, and she made me some fried eggs and toast. Nothing crazy – it’s just nice to have someone to make breakfast for me.”

With an 11 o’clock start, Dan Evans barely had time to finish his before an impressive 7-6, 6-2 victory against eighth seed Radu Albot of Moldova.

It sets him up for a second round clash with Pierre-Hugues Herbert.

Andy Murray’s Wimbledon men’s doubles partner beat stand-in Denis Kudla after the withdrawal of Feliciano Lopez, Murray’s former partner at Queen’s, who felt the need to rest after his efforts in becoming both singles and doubles champion at the Fever-Tree Championships.

Today’s highlight will be a clash between British no. 2 Cameron Norrie, who beat Jeremy Chardy 6-3, 7-6, and the nation’s top player Kyle Edmund, who was given a bye in the first round.
