Coming off the backs of successful accomplishments with the Abraham Accords, Jerusalem has now approved the new location for the U.S. Embassy.
Deputy Mayor Fleur Hassan-Nahoum stated on Twitter that the city’s building and planning committee has approved the building plans for the new U.S. Embassy.
Another committee must still grant approval, but Hassan-Nahoum says that is likely to happen in the coming weeks. The new central location will not be far from the temporary embassy on Hebron road, The Times of Israel reports.
The site is on an invisible line that separates East and West Jerusalem. It’s also reportedly in the part of the city Israel captured from Jordan in 1967 during the Six Days War. It is not known if the Embassy crosses the boundary into the Palestinian part of Jerusalem. Biden says that he will not move the embassy back to Tel Aviv.
The controversial decision to move the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv comes after President Trump declared Jerusalem Israel’s Capital in 2018.
This was just one of the outgoing administration’s moves aimed at strengthening ties with Israel, a U.S. ally.
Further, the U.S. recently brokered the Abraham Accords, a Middle East peace agreement, signed by Sudan, United Arab Emirates, Moldova and Bahrain and is a step toward economics and prosperity for Israel.
President Trump has noted that the Abraham Accords “take a major stride toward a future in which people of all faiths and backgrounds live together in peace and prosperity.” Part of the agreement calls for “tolerance and respect for every person in order to make this world a place where all can enjoy a life of dignity and hope, no matter their race, faith or ethnicity” and “to end radicalization and conflict to provide all children a better future.”
