COLUMBUS, Ohio — Twenty thoughts on Ohio State football and its season-opening win against Nebraska.

1. Kerry Coombs’ office is across the hall from Larry Johnson’s inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center. For weeks, Coombs would see Haskell Garrett, stitches in his face, seated in Johnson’s office, preparing for whenever Garrett’s time on the field might come. In early September, it was likely difficult to envision Garrett playing at all this year. Not after an ugly and scary off-campus incident in late August when Garrett was shot in the face while trying to break up an argument.

He spent one day in the hospital — a remarkably short stay given the bullet went through one side of his face and exited the other. What’s more remarkable is that fewer than two months later, Garrett was on the field Saturday against Nebraska.
