Jamie Lee Curtis Says She’s “Here to Support” Her Trans Daughter Ruby

Scream queen Jamie Lee Curtis knows a thing or two about the dangers of hiding in the dark. In opening up about her daughter Ruby’s transition, the Halloween Kills star is hoping that their family can shed some light on the importance of open communication

“It’s speaking a new language,” Curtis told People in a recent joint interview with Ruby, their first since Curtis publicly revealed that her 25-year-old daughter is trans in June.

“It’s learning new terminology and words,” Curtis continued. “And I’m going to blow it, I’m going to make mistakes. I would like to try to avoid making big mistakes.”

Ruby told the magazine that, as the child of two famous parents, she has preferred to maintain her privacy over the years. (Her father, Jamie Lee Curtis’ husband of 37 years, is comedian and Best in Show director Christopher Guest.) But Ruby also recognizes that their family can act as a beacon of hope for others navigating gender transition.

“I’m happy to talk about my experiences now,” Ruby told People. “Me coming out has nothing to do with my mom being famous. I’ve tried to stay out of the spotlight for many years, or at least done my best to. I’m happy to be more visible if it helps others.”

Ruby is currently working as a video editor for a YouTube gaming personality, People reported.

In the interview, Curtis went on to say that she’s not telling other parents how to feel about their own children, but that she hopes her family’s visibility can prove helpful.

“I’m not proselytizing, and I’m not trying to force-feed something to people,” the horror icon said. “I’m simply saying, ‘This is our family’s experience.’ I am here to support Ruby. That is my job.”
