Jadon Sancho and Ben Chillwell: England leave duo out of Croatia squad in Euro 2020 opener

Why have Jadon Sancho and Ben Chilwell been left out of the squad?

It is unclear whether they, like Maguire, are struggling with any sort of injury problem.

The alternative is that Southgate can only name 12 substitutes and the Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea stars have missed the cut-off. Three players from Southgate’s 26-man squad will always have to be dropped for each Euro 2020 game.

Both Sancho and Chilwell finished the season strongly for their respective clubs. Sancho helped Dortmund to a third-place finish in the Bundesliga along with lifting the DFB-Pokal Cup. Meanwhile, Chilwell was part of the Champions League-winning side, playing the full 90 minutes against Manchester City in the final.

As a result of Chilwell’s prolonged season, he arrived late to England’s training camp — like all Chelsea and City players — and did not take part in either of the warm-up games against Austria and Romania. Sancho missed the Austria game due to a mild throat infection but played 65 minutes against Romania.

What are the starting line-ups for England vs Croatia?

England’s starting XI: Pickford, Walker, Rice, Stones, Kane, Sterling, Trippier, Phillips, Mings, Mount, Foden.

Croatia’s starting XI: Livakovic; Vrsaljko, Vida, Caleta-Car, Gvardiol; Brozovic, Modric, Kovacic; Rebic, Perisic, Kramaric.

What is the full substitutes bench?

England’s substitutes are: Shaw, Grealish, J Henderson, Rashford, D Henderson, Coady, Calvert-Lewin, White, Johnstone, James, Saka, Bellingham.

Did Southgate have to name two goalkeepers on the bench?

No — although Southgate can only name 12 substitutes, there is no explicit rule that a team must select both reserve goalkeepers on their bench.
