It’s the Freak’s show: Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo wins second straight NBA MVP


With 20,000 fans surrounding him outside Fiserv Forum, Giannis Antetokounmpo made a bold statement with a big smile on his face.

“After this day, please don’t call me the MVP until I win it again next year,” Antetokounmpo told the raucous crowd of Bucks fans in July 2019.

On Friday, Antetokounmpo won the 2019-20 NBA Most Valuable Player award. Lakers forward LeBron James and Rockets guard James Harden were the other finalists for the award, but neither came close to Antetokounmpo in the voting by sportswriters and broadcasters who cover the league. The Bucks star took 85 of the 101 first-place votes and 16 second-place votes for a total of 962 of a possible 1,010 points.

By winning a second consecutive NBA MVP, Antetokounmpo made history.

He is the 12th player to win back-to-back MVPs and the 14th player to win the NBA’s highest regular-season honor more than once. Antetokounmpo also joined LeBron James and Kareem Abdul Jabbar…
