‘It’s pretty special’: Rays celebrate AL East title, set sights on bigger goals


A safety-minded edict from the league office made it clear there would be no champagne sprayed in the Rays clubhouse Wednesday night as they celebrated just the third American League East crown in franchise history.

So silly string and confetti it was, and like everything about the 2020 season for Tampa Bay, it was certainly different, but memorable nonetheless.

“I don’t know if you can ever prepare for a moment like that. It’s pretty special,” manager Kevin Cash said after an 8-5 win over the Mets. “The message to the guys was, again: Congrats, thank you and take a moment to look around the room and the many people that have been a part of this club this year, from staff to certainly players, our injured players, our entire organization.
