‘It’s challenging’: Mariners press on despite key early injuries


The first five weeks of spring training were about as boring as boring could be for the Mariners, which actually wasn’t anything worth complaining about.

The last thing a team wants while preparing for the 162-game grind is for the injury bug to turn your carefully constructed depth chart into recyclable waste in March and April.

Hitters and pitchers were unencumbered as they got their at-bats and their innings in while in Arizona, as their sights were set firmly on April 1 and Opening Day while also landing in Seattle in one piece for what figures to be a critical season for the franchise.

Only they didn’t quite make it. On March 22, outfielder Kyle Lewis banged up his right knee against an outfield wall trying to make a catch.
